There is much to identify with when we begin to think and look at our past as a civilization. Societies, races, cultures, almost all have been tortured, criticized, or persecuted for their beliefs as groups. That in it of itself was an identification. One group calling another group "liars" "devils" and various other types of name calling doesn't mean that either group is right or wrong, however, there is a lot of identification within our history as a species.
The identification that a group of people sometimes create leads to others believing they are "victims" as well and should join this group to "fight" those against them. The groups of people who gather and identify themselves as the group against so and so have created an ego for the group and everyone in it. As we are witnessing more recently, there are more open-minded, world conscious, and self-lead individuals who are not trying to command or lead a group of people against someone or something. On the opposite side, surely there are still groups of people who swear on patriotism, religion, God himself, and smaller levels of identifying groups for which they are resisting.
Identification with something does not lead any of us towards freedom even from the very thing we may be opposing, in actuality by opposing, or "fighting" against something, it retaliates just as many have been taught to punch back if someone punches us. So when and how does this all end? When I am able to leave identification and connect with the self, which in it's essence is nature, love, peace. Jesus speaks of 'turning the other cheek' when we are attacked or hurt. Is the stronger message being sent by "fighting" or by being?
When we are able to awaken to the true essence of our being, to our universal connection to this entire world and everyone and everything in it, we are able to stop resisting, we are able to stop fighting, we are able to see ourselves and others for who and what we are: beings. Being means to be. There is nothing to myself if I can't be. Imagine taking the being out of a cat, would it be able to be a cat, would it sit around and sleep for the most part of the day, or use it's natural instinct to defend itself? A cat can only be a cat, it cannot be something it is not like an elephant or a bird, it does not fly, nor does it weigh over 300 pounds, it just is, it is just a cat and it is not worried about it's hair, cell phone, or wallet. A cat also does not have the ego to judge others, itself, or anything around it. It may be aware of where not to go, what to stay around from, most likely because of it's senses or it's experience but it does not create this story in it's head that this one race of cats attacked me so I must know be careful and hold my guard against any cat that looks similar to it.
Getting closer to the self brings about our true essence: being. Just be, don't try to be something you are not, there is nothing more, nothing less than the self. If you do not agree with something, be aware first of what you are feeling, where it is felt, and also, make sure you are not tying it to the past, to something that someone said, to something you experienced and now judge because of that experience. If you are to take action towards something you find can be improved make sure it is not because of someone or something, and be conscious of the action you are taking, because as it is said 'our actions affect more than what we think we are affecting'. Actions and even the energy we create towards something or someone carries beyond our present moment, but there is no need to bother the mind in trying to figure out how it affects others, but by being aware of our emotions, actions, and energy we are able to know what we are feeling before letting the feelings, thoughts, and actions control us.
